If you ask most people who know me what I do, they’ll say I design wine labels. Even my kids tell people that. It’s true. I do design wine labels. The majority of work I’ve produced in my career as a designer has been for the wine and spirits industry. I’ve created advertising, promotional material, websites and social media content for major producers from around the world. But still, I’m known for designing wine labels.
There’s a reason I’m labelled as such. For 15 consecutive years I designed labels for an Italian winery for their Vino Novello, the Italian version of Beaujolais Nouveau. It was a bold and colourful series that gained a lot of notoriety and a dedicated fanbase. The wine was released annually in November alongside Beaujolais Nouveau. These are cheap and cheerful wines of celebration and I held an annual party to share the experience and promote myself as designer. Hence my reputation. I designed many other labels as well but that series will be my legacy.
I personally enjoy wine. All wine – red, white, rosé and sparkling, Old World and New. I’m fascinated not only by the wine itself but of course the packaging as well. The brilliant work of designers from around the world excites and inspires me. It’s why I created this site. To showcase great work. To explore what makes a label compelling. To talk about colour, type, images, printing and materials.
I hope this becomes a conversation. Share your opinions. Especially if you disagree with mine. I welcome perspectives I may not have considered.
