House of the Dragon is the recently released prequel to HBO’s blockbuster series, Game of Thrones. Like the original series, House of the Dragon has released branded wines for the legion of fans. The flight of three includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and a red blend. The labels differ only by background colour and product identity.
This is premium packaging. The overall impression is opulent, masculine, dark, and brooding. It represents the brand very well. The background of the Cabernet Sauvignon is a textured graduation of luscious, deep reds. It is emblazoned with a metallic gold House Targaryen three-headed dragon symbol. Stacked below that, in type of similar sizes, are the vintage, grape varietal, and state of origin. The House of the Dragon logo in gold on matte black plays a supporting role on a separate label underneath the main panel.
The back label contrasts with a grey background and black dragon symbol behind the HOTD logo and tasting notes.
It is the attention to detail that elevates this package. The subtle dragon scales on the capsule. Repetition of the dragon symbol on the cap top. The dragon’s tail printed on the cork. These little things, when noticed, create a deeper appreciation from the consumer.
The television series surprises. You never know what to expect. The wine is like that as well. Expectation of a California Cabernet Sauvignon—especially one representing this brand—would be full-bodied and rich. A blockbuster of a wine. That’s what the packaging suggests. The first sip was surprisingly bright and fruity. But like a well-crafted plot, it develops as it unfolds. With time in the glass, this wine expands in richness and depth. It is smooth and has a far superior finish to Game of Thrones.
