To many, the lowly ampersand is just a useful way to abbreviate the word “and”. For designers—type nerds as we are—they are a beautiful letterform. Often one of the most meticulously designed characters in a type set, even though they’re not an actual letter. My personal obsession with ampersands is revealed on this Pinterest board.
The ampersand in the branding of Ivory & Burt wines dominates the label. Its psychedelic era vibe in marked contrast to the graphic, diagonal black shadow that defines it. The blind embossing effect visually completes its sweeping curves. A subtle pronouncement against the textured ivory label stock.
Ivory & Burt. It’s a curious monicker. Colour & common first name. But the name relates to neither. The brand celebrates its founders, Charles Ivory and J.M. Burt. Part of the story revealed on the back label. The brand history is rich. A fact many consumers appreciate.
The wine is classic California Chardonnay, rich and buttery with “golden apple and tropical fruit flavors” and perfectly harmonious notes of oak. A bit less bold than its distinctive branding but with quality above its price point.
