Kaiken Indómito Malbec

Daryl Woods Publisher/Reviewer

Odd duck? Silly goose? An image consistent with the aspirations of Bodega Kaiken in creating the Indómito line. A Kaiken is indeed a goose. A Patagonian goose to be exact. The bird soars over the Andes between Argentina and Chile.

Untamed. Indomitable. From the label, “Indómito represents the youthful, adventurous spirit of our Kaiken. His lively and extrovert personality emboldens him to fly freely in search of new challenges. No matter the direction he takes, he’s always ready to embark on a new journey and discover new horizons.”

The Kaiken collage on the fiery red label captures the spirit of following a new path. There’s a lot going on here. In addition to the goose—which is wearing an aviator cap, goggles, and binoculars—there is a hot air balloon, globe, compass, an hourglass, feathers, random gears, and grapes on the vine. And those are just the black-and-white elements. There is also a spikey sun, a topographical linear pattern, and a small plane, all rendered in gold in the background. It’s a fascinating collection but it’s still the goose that gets your attention. It’s just so wonderfully weird.

If you care to embark on an adventure of discovery for the Indómito wine series you can access a promotional video through this QR code from the back label. It’s a real trip. In a hot air balloon no less. Nice tie-in with the label.

If you assume this wine is novelty over quality you would be wrong. I don’t drink much Malbec but this wine has convinced me I should try more. It is floral on the nose with fresh, juicy, ripe dark fruit flavours. It defies the expectations created by the label and yet represents its quirky spirit at the same time.
