I’m not that familiar with Carmenère. I don’t recall any I’ve tasted nor do I search for it. So what would could compel me to give Carmenère another chance? This label.
Everything about the Secreto de Viu Manent Carmenère label is so damn playful, I couldn’t resist it. The bizarre illustration by Chilean artist Catalina Abbott made me smile. Then there’s the type. Quite the funky collection of faces. There’s a fun and casual vibe to it all that’s highly engaging.
Secreto doesn’t target wine snobs. It’s packaged for the people. In particular, young people for whom wine is often considered to be too serious. It doesn’t mean younger wine drinkers don’t care to learn about wine. For those interested in more information about this wine, there’s a QR code on the back label that links to a YouTube video.
So, what’s the secreto? Carmenère grapes from mature vines make up 85% of this wine. The secret is the remaining 15% of grapes. These are from younger vines and give a fresh, lively lift to the red cherry and dark berry flavours. The result is pleasantly surprising. Though fruit-forward, the wine has great depth and silky smoothness. This is one Carmenère I will not forget.
