Mancinello Nero di Troia

Daryl Woods Publisher/Reviewer

There are numerous ways to attract attention with wine packaging. Many are demonstrated by examples on this site. But few products include multiple ways to earn attention. Tagaro Mancinello Nero Di Troia is one that does.

It’s hard not to notice the Mancinello bottle on a shelf. The exquisitely textured, sculpted glass is a standout with its organic patterning that catches the light and begs to be handled. I’ve reviewed many wine packages with great bottle designs. Some of those seem to abandon further effort when it comes to the label. Mancinello leans in.

The label design is clean and quiet with a simple gold quarter moon above restrained typography and branding. But the finishing, with a glossy, embossed texture, elevates what would otherwise be a basic white label. It’s a good reminder that material choices and finishing can transform simplicity into sophistication.

Another feature of the label that rejects tradition is its one-piece wraparound format. It just seems modern. My only criticism is that it stops short, leaving a wide gap. The result is very narrow information panels, forcing the type to be too small for the space. It’s barely readable. The notes are very typical and nothing that would change anyone’s mind regarding purchase.

The Tagaro logo—stamped in gold on the matte black capsule—with its rustic style, is interesting but inconsequential. Its scale is wisely minimal.

Lastly, they affix that far-too-common brag sticker announcing a reviewer’s 92 pt. score. Annoying from a design perspective but it actually works as validation and motivates purchases. Especially when the review is from a respected source like James Sucking.

The wine earns its score. The flavours are of dark fruit with smoky overtones. The ABV is high at 15%, but the wine is more approachable than imposing.

Mancinello Nero Di Troia manages to achieve a common objective for Italian winemakers—creating a package that feels simultaneously classic and modern. All elements combine to express the sum of the parts. A quiet but confident display of finesse.
