Sericis Monastrell

Daryl Woods Publisher/Reviewer

This is a handsome piece of packaging. If we attribute the term “handsome” with a certain masculine resonance, then it fits Sericis Monastrell like a finely tailored suit. Its audacious design, featuring a black and gold metallic geometric pattern, exudes confidence in every dimension of its presentation. So self-assured, in fact, that promotional images feature a facing with only this captivating pattern. The bottle is robust and squat with a label that wraps almost completely around it. The prominent “Sericis” name—in a bold serif typeface—along with other customary front label elements run vertically, creating a clear demarcation between the pattern and the informative back label. It’s a daring design, but exceptionally well-structured.

Sericis deviates from the prevalent trend in wine packaging, which often caters to women. Women are the majority purchasers of wine. It makes sense to target the larger market. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the male consumer base is also substantial and appreciates packaging that resonates with their preferences. These are broad marketing generalities. Sericis Monastrell could be appreciated by all wine enthusiasts, regardless of gender or identity.

The back label provides succinct insight: “Sericis” translates to “silky” in Latin. This wine’s name and its smooth, refined character pay homage to the Casa de la Seda guild house. It is crafted using Monastrell grapes and matures for a minimum of 14 months in new French oak casks—straightforward, no frills, just pertinent background and winemaking details.

Sericis Monastrell will be enjoyed by anyone acquainted with and fond of this varietal. It boasts a medium-bodied profile, characterized by a dry and fruity composition that showcases the typical interplay of cherry, plum, and coffee flavours. It’s a wine that expresses the essence of Monastrell and is quite reasonably priced.

Sericis Monastrell’s packaging embodies a confident and masculine design with its striking black and gold metallic geometric pattern. The bottle exudes charisma and substance, with a label that wraps its robust form. A truly handsome piece of design.
