The magnificent passion fruit flower illustration on the Tarima Monastrell label is as dramatic an image as you might ever see in wine packaging. The brilliant colour isolated on a black field is powerful and commands attention.
Even with an image this distinctive, it isn’t often that artwork is addressed in the wine notes. Tarima Monastrell explains its choice immediately on the back label. “The image of the passion fruit flower was chosen to represent Tarima because the intricate blossom never ceases to amaze people around the world. The vivid colors and complex structure draw you in…just as the complex aromas of this Monastrell entice and draw your attention.” The copy then segues eloquently to references describing the vineyards, winemaking process, and tasting notes. All without overindulging the reader. Stories plus information engage consumers.
A few other points about the front label. It is quite wide to accommodate the large blossom. Even with extended dimensions, you need to spin the bottle to take it all in. The only type on the front label is the name and varietal. If the typeface seems familiar it is because Trajan is extremely popular for movie titles.
This is a wine I’ve known for many years. It is as bold in the glass as the bloom on the label with vibrant dark fruit flavours and hints of spice. If you like reds with a bit of jamminess you’ll enjoy this one.
I understand many would find this label to be garish. There isn’t likely much middle ground with this one. Love it or hate it? Let me know in the comments below.
