There are several notable aspects of this wine label. Let’s start at the top. The name RETO is set in a classic banknote typeface. For whatever reason, this typeface is extremely popular in wine and spirits packaging. I’ve used it myself. Silver foil makes the name pop against the matte black background.
Moving to the middle, the grape varietal, Malbec stands out equally in red. The trendy hand-drawn letter style makes for a surprisingly successful contrast to the typeface above. It could benefit from being a bit larger.
Sprouting from the bottom of the label is a flower stem in glossy black. The bloom is repeated on the top of the capsule. Not sure what the flower is. It isn’t mentioned in the notes. Likely common to the area. The black-on-black effect on the label is subtle but enchanting.
As stated on the back label, “The Great Wall of The Andes rises from the Pacific…”. This is illustrated at the bottom of the label with a patchwork of linear shapes and a few solid red ones. I assume the vineyards are the ones highlighted in red. Quilted fields are a popular subject in wine marketing. This expression stands above most.
This label’s success is not from any single element but the sum of all.
The back label tells the story of the wine—the terroir, environment, challenges, and craftsmanship that bring the wine to life.
Malbec is a dark, full-bodied wine and this one is an excellent example. The label does well in preparing you for the rich, earthy flavours to come.
