Italy is world-renowned for its artistic excellence. From music and fashion to painting, sculpture and architecture, the Italian expression of craft is extraordinary. You’ve likely eaten pasta in an Italian restaurant served in a bowl decorated with intricate patterns and bright, vibrant colours.
That colourful crockery is what immediately came to mind when I saw the label adorning a bottle of La Carusa Nero D’Avola Syrah. With its exquisitely detailed ornamental composition and strong symmetry, it is a fine example of the Sicilian carretto style. The artwork conveys a level of craftsmanship and finesse that creates an immediate expectation of quality for the wine inside.
First impressions of packaging are much like our experiences with people. If we take an instant liking to someone, that positive perception will likely persist. Wine is no different. Enjoying a bottle begins with choosing it, and packaging plays a significant role in that decision. A well-designed label establishes an expectation before the cork is pulled and, when the wine delivers, reinforces the experience. If I were assigning points, I’d have no hesitation adding two to the wine’s score for a package that gets this much right.
La Carusa leans heavily on Sicily’s dominant red grape, Nero D’Avola, blended here with Syrah to add depth and structure. The combination delivers flavours of dark red fruit with a good measure of juiciness, giving the wine a lively character.
This label embraces Sicily’s decorative tradition without turning it into a cliché, and uses that visual language to establish an immediate connection between the wine and its place of origin. More importantly, it creates an expectation of quality that the wine has an opportunity to fulfill.
That is what good wine packaging should do. It should make you want to pick up the bottle, convey something about what’s inside and, ideally, make the first sip feel like confirmation of a good decision. La Carusa does all three. As an overall experience, the package comes remarkably close to perfection in communicating the character and quality of the wine it represents.
