La Tribuna Red

Daryl Woods Publisher/Reviewer

Guess.

Guess where this wine is from.

Guess what La Tribuna means.

Guess what culture these characters represent.

Chances are, you’ll be wrong on all counts.

The wine is a red blend from Spain. La Tribuna? A tribe? A tribute? Oh! The Tribune—protector of citizens’ rights. So, one or all of these characters are the tribune. Got it.

They are a curious lot. Their appearance borrows from many cultures but doesn’t appear to be specific to one. Still a bit risky in times of sensitivity to misappropriation. Where did they come from? Who created them?

When possible, I like to dive deeper into artwork and creators. In this case, I almost missed the artist’s credit. His name appears near the lower left side of the illustration in type so small I had to magnify it to read it. Jerjes Llopsis is a prolific artist with a plethora of postings on social media. Much of his work is bizarre but less cartoonish than La Tribuna.

Branded with a funky typeface and funny folk from an unknown world, you’re probably not expecting too serious a wine. It isn’t. This is easy-drinking, casual wine. The label claims no more than a bit of French oak aging. There is no story or flavour profile. You would buy it for fun. It is that kind of wine.
