Zonte’s Footstep Scarlet Ladybird Rosé

Daryl Woods Publisher/Reviewer

Zonte’s Footstep has created a fascinating series of labels across their line. Although the subjects vary widely, the formula is always the same—a beautifully textured pencil drawing with a metallic red spot colour.

The Scarlet Ladybird Rosé is a bold example. Not only bold in scale but also risky. Some people are repulsed by insects of any kind. Even people who might otherwise enjoy this wine. Why would they do that? The answer is…attention. It’s hard to get in the wine market and even harder to get attention that connects.

Many recognizable creatures have devout fans. Dogs, cats, horses and almost any bird, wild animal or reptile you can think of have their obsessive admirers who are drawn to products that represent them. Ladybugs are no exception. Lots of people love them.

What makes this ladybug illustration even more interesting is its depiction of the insect prepared for flight. The red shell is open with wings exposed and spread. Not the cute little spotted red dome that would be the typical choice.

The back label does well to explain the reverence for the ladybug as a protector of the fruit of the vines. The tasting notes expand on the “lady” references. But “ladylike”? “lady killer”? Not sure those dated expressions are the best choices in 2021.

There’s another detail on the back label that deserves mention. A QR code. They seem to be making a comeback after years of ridicule for being poorly executed and expecting too much from consumers to bother with. I bothered for you. The code takes you to a short animation of the label illustration on Zonte’s Footstep YouTube channel. It’s amazing to see the detailed pencil drawing in motion. I watched almost the entire series.

Zonte’s Footstep produces some very good wines. This Rosé is consistent with the brand’s reputation for quality. Expressive of juicy red berries and yet dry with minimal sweetness. If you’re a fan of Rosé and ladybugs, free this wine from the fridge and release it in your glass.
